When I was a little boy, my family would take me to the fair And I'd stand in line to ride that carousel- It'd go around and around, and I'd dream of flying off Just like Mary Poppins' fantasies of hopping in the chalk And I'd cry please, mister, please, don't you make this big wheel stop When I was a teenage boy, I'd ride out to the fair with my friends We'd run along, take that gravitron for a spin- And it'd go around and around, like a dreidel or a top And it'd scare me half to death once the floor would start to drop I'd cry please, mister, please, don't you make this big wheel stop When I was a younger man, I'd take my baby to the fair We'd hold hands, and we'd ride that ferris wheel- It'd go around and around, then I'd kiss her at the top And I'd thank that lord above for the gifts that he had wrought I'd cry please, mister, please, if this life is but a wheel don't make it stop But now I'm old and in the way, my hair's too gray for the fair I watch the world from this wooden rocking chair- It goes around and around, I see the bottom through the top I've been waiting for a while for the other shoe to drop So please, mister, please, can we make this big wheel stop? |
